Stage scene

After texturing the microphone I decided to make the stage where it will be placed. I then made curtains and the floor lights. I used an art deco style pattern as the backdrop to fit in with the genre and style of the scene . Once the scene was made I set up lighting for the scene. I've used a fog effect on the spotlight to try and give it more realism.

This is what it looks like rendered.

I like the way this has come out and this will be part of the final piece.

I used the stage from Fat Sam's grand slam, in the film Bugsy Malone as reference

Microphone

I have started wok on a 1920's style microphone.

It still needs texturing but so far im happy with it.

I have used these images as reference for the model, these were taken from
http://www.btinternet.com/~roger.beckwith/bh/mics/bth.htm

and google images

Various beer vessels

Here is a beer bottle i modeled. i made this using Nurbs and I made a  brown glass texture using mental ray materials.

I have enabled ray tracing in order to get the shadows and lit the scenes with a spot light and an ambient light.

This is a pint of beer which i modeled and textured. It's the same glass technique as the above but i used an image instead of the brown colouring.  The top is textured to look like froth and has a bump map applied.

I'm reasonably happy with these. Maybe with more practice i could make the glass slightly more realistic. Getting the glass right was hard, especially with the clear glass for the pint glass.

playing with fire

One of the scenes we have in our film shows a guy lighting a cigarette. I had already made the lighter, but needed to make fire. Here is a animation of the lighter opening and fire being made. I used maya Fluid effects to make the fire.

Fancy a spin?

Here is the roulette table finished.

The wheel was not as hard to texture as I first thought.

Im very pleased with this, one of my favourite pieces of work.

Casino Games

Our bar is to feature a number of casino style games, Whilst doing some research on the style of the games from the 1920's i found a guy who had was a collector of such items and had pictures on his website

http://casinoantiques.com/

From some of these images I have started modeling some of the games. Below is my roulette table.

The roulette wheel still needs texturing.

I am very happy with how this is coming along, the wheel is proving slightly tricky to texture but i will find a way.

Load of Balls

I applied a wood texture to the table itself and planaer mapped the faces to make the material look natural

To make the table look like it had been used I spread the balls around the table.

This helped to show how people ahd been in the bar but left in a hurry. which also helps with the overall atmosphere of the piece.

These are the pool balls textured.

I'm pleased with how these came out.

I made a template for pool balls using photoshop.
Then applied the different colours and spots to each one.

Here are what the images look like before i applied them to the balls

Pool Table Model before texturing

Here is a pool table I modeled along with cues, triangle and balls. None are textured yet.

I'm pretty happy with how this came out, this is the second attempt at a pool table, the first didn't have the correct styling and looked too modern.

This was modeled from a picture of a 1920's pool table. as seen below.

Clothes for character, character posing

We have decided to use a rig called max for out project, because he has the right look we are after. We will have to add texture to him and clothing though to make him fit  as our character better

I made a hat and a basic coat, Here is the look we are going for.

looking into art deco designs.

Having looked at my models and designs for props. It occurred to me that I was not incorporating the art deco element of design in enough.

To combat this I decided to research Art Deco a bit more and try and learn more if its styling.

Here are some images I looked at.

This is a pool table, with art deco styling, Im currently in the process of modeling a pool table. This image was important, as the Pool table is quite a big feature within the bar so will most likely get a decent amount of screen time. And I wanted it to fit in with the styling of the rest of the bar
This is an image of a mirrored bar. I thought it might be a nice touch to the bar if if we could do something along these lines.

I like how it incorporates the art deco styling.

This is a picture I found of an art deco styled restaurant. I like the lighting of the place.
This is great reference for my modeling as from this i can see how all the props seem to follow the same style even though they are all massively different is size a shape.

As well as images i have been looking at films to try and get an idea for what an actual speak easy might have looked like.

Bugsy Malone seemed to show the bar quite well through one of the songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNfB58oBjA0

As well as Bugsy Malone I tried to find other films set around the 1920's
I watched The Untouchable and Public enemies. These are both gangstar films set around the time of prohibition.

Smoke effect video

This is a playblast of my smoke test

Smoke Test

We were thinking of having ashtrays with cigars/cigarettes still burning, where people had left the bar in a hurry.

I have been playing around with particle effects to try and achieve this.

I am still working on this, as the smoke does not look realistic yet. but tweaks here and there will help.

Zippo Lighter

I modeled a Zippo Lighter as part of the props or the project,

Im not to happy with the textures. but they can be redone.

It doesn't quite look realistic enough.

I need to learn more about texturing so can update the model once i have learned more.

I have a Zippo lighter, so modeled it from that.
